Noises in the Attic at Night: How to Tell What Animal It Is
Scratching, scurrying, or thumping in the attic? Use this quick guide to tell raccoons from squirrels, mice, bats and birds by the sound, timing and signs — then get the right removal.
Match the noise to the animal
Fast, light scratching during the day usually means squirrels. Scurrying and gnawing at night points to mice or rats. Heavy thumps and rolling after dark suggest raccoons. Fluttering near dusk can mean birds or bats.
Look for the supporting clues
Droppings, entry-hole size, and grease marks help confirm the culprit. Raccoons leave large droppings and big holes; rodents leave small pellets and pencil-width gaps; bats leave dark, crumbly guano below their roost.
Why the right ID matters
Each animal needs a different removal and exclusion plan. Bats, for example, are protected in many areas and have specific timing rules. Getting the identification right the first time saves money and avoids repeat visits.
